NAZ Represents at Northside Education Town Hall

NAZ had a strong presence at the November 20 State of Education Town Hall at North Community High School, hosted by Senator Bobby Joe Champion, Representative Esther Agbaje, and Representative Fue Lee. The event featured remarks from MPS Superintendent Lisa Sayles-Adams, School Board Member Sharon El-Amin, and Minnesota Education Commissioner Willie Jett.

Eight NAZ parents from the Promise Advocates Cohort (PAC) attended and posed thoughtful questions to state and district leaders. In preparation, parents examined key issues affecting North Minneapolis—budget decisions, transportation barriers, mental health supports, special education needs, and the equitable implementation of the Read Act. Their questions highlighted consistent themes of access, equity, and meaningful community partnership.

These parents are graduates of NAZ’s Parent Nation training, facilitated by Karla Smith and Rasheda Jenkins, which equips caregivers to engage more deeply in policy, systems, and issues impacting Northside scholars. Through this training—developed in partnership with the statewide Education Partnership Coalition—parents build the skills to analyze policy, navigate government processes, and advocate effectively for their families.

Events like the Town Hall give NAZ parents the opportunity to put this learning into action, strengthen their advocacy networks, and ensure Northside voices are heard where decisions are made. By cultivating authentic parent leadership, NAZ continues to advance systems change and drive lasting impact for the Northside community.
